Student volunteers

We are looking for two enthusiastic student volunteers to support our annual conference, taking place 24–26 June 2026 in Christchurch.

We’re particularly keen to hear from University of Canterbury students with an interest in science communication who would like to gain hands-on experience supporting a national professional conference - and helping us spread the word about it on campus and online.

Register your interest before 15 April 2026.

What’s involved?

We’re looking for student volunteers who can help promote the conference in the lead-up, for example by:

  • Putting up posters and sharing information around campus

  • Posting about the conference in relevant student groups or on social media

  • Helping amplify conference content online during the event (e.g. live-posting, photos, short videos)

Volunteers also play an important role in helping the conference run smoothly on the day. Tasks may include:

  • Assisting at the registration desk and welcoming delegates

  • Supporting sessions by running microphones for Q&A, keeping speakers to time, and helping with AV setup

  • Monitoring questions from livestream participants

  • Helping usher attendees back into sessions after breaks

If you have particular skills or interests  - such as photography, video, social media livestreaming, graphic design, or livestream support - we’d love to hear about those too.

What we can offer

In return for your time and support, we can offer:

  • Complimentary registration for the full conference

  • The opportunity to attend and participate in most sessions

  • Practical experience in science communication, events, and professional networking

How to apply

To express interest, please email hello@scanz.co.nz before 15 April with:

  • A short introduction to you and your area of study

  • A brief statement about your interest in science communication and the conference

  • How you might like to help (including any relevant skills or networks you could bring)

  • Your availability across the conference dates:

    • Tuesday 24 June (pre-conference setup, times TBC)

    • Wednesday 25 June: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (conference Day 1)

    • Thursday 26 June: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (conference Day 2)

We’ll get back to you by the end of April to let you know if you’ve been selected.

You don’t need to be available for the entire conference, but knowing your availability will help us plan support across the event.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with us at hello@scanz.co.nz
