What’s expected of being on the SCANZ Executive Committee?

Leadership experience is not required, but we value enthusiasm, commitment, teamwork and good internal communications, to help spread the workload for large projects and make sure things get done efficiently and effectively. All the roles are flexible and can be used as an opportunity to develop new skills.

An understanding (or a commitment to developing an understanding) of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and/or lived experience as members of underrepresented/underserved communities in science communication is also non-essential, but would be a great asset to help drive SCANZ towards achieving its goals of:

  • providing science communicators in Aotearoa with more ways to upskill, connect and collaborate with others

  • becoming more accessible and inclusive

  • improving how we recognise and embed the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The time commitment required for each position is about 10-15 hours a month plus attending the Annual General Meeting and a minimum of three strategic meetings per year (normally 1hr online at lunchtime).

As an Incorporated Society, all those serving on the Executive Committee must be SCANZ members - but membership is not required for applying or being offered a role on the Committee, and we wish to keep our opportunities as open and inclusive as possible.
